Holland, Michigan is widely known as a destination for Dutch craft, with everything from wooden shoe-making, furniture, and fields of tulips, to the iconic Windmill Island Gardens, which is home to an authentic Dutch windmill known as De Zwaan. Its Dutch roots also extend to the olykoek, or donut, as local businesses and shops look to master the classic pastry in its many versions.
SOLACE Magazine has highlighted a few Holland bakeries and businesses offering popular donut-inspired selections alongside other fresh bakery items from pies to pan dulce. Donut-lover or not, one is likely to find something sweet on the palate.

The bakery case at the entrance to Colin’s Bakery is one to remember, with generously proportioned pastries of all shapes, textures, and sizes laid out for the picking. Colin’s creates traditional Mexican pastries as well as classic donuts, all somehow made to be uniformly large and equally delicious.
Bounties of multi-colored Mante Roscas appear alongside sweet potato empanadas, pan dulce, cupcakes, cinnamon donuts, and pastel Jello treats that make for great little gifts and pick-me-ups. Pair them with some Champurrado, a warm, chocolate-based Mexican beverage, for a nap-inducing snack. The bakery also creates custom cakes for Colin’s fans to have their personal fix, or for newcomers to try something new and delicious.

Bowerman Blueberries Farm Market
15793 James St, Holland, MI 49424
Bowerman Blueberries Farm Market has been a part of the Holland farm and market scene since 1954, and has become wildly popular for their fresh blueberry donuts, the scent of which are known to glaze over morning baking operations on-site. Though blueberry is their most popular donut flavor, the farm bakery also offers cherry donuts on Tuesdays and Thursdays, as well as pumpkin and apple in the fall. You’ll want to give their pies a try too.
“Our farm bakery is known for our famous blueberry donuts. We have heard customers say that our donuts taste like a little piece of heaven,” said Kassie Grasmanis, who oversees the farm market bakery and granddaughter of the farm’s founders, William and Winifred Bowerman.
“If you have visited in the past couple of years, then you know that our bakers have been busy turning our homegrown blueberries into gorgeous pies made from scratch,” Grasmanis added.
The bakery makes pies of all flavors and sizes, like deep dish, minis, and hand pies, in forms like lattice and “dream pie,” which appears as it sounds. Other treats for breakfast, snacking, or dessert includes strudels, turnovers, crisps, and more—all part of the seasonal gathering of fresh berries from the more-than 90 acres of farmland. Though they reopen for the season in June, check them out at a variety of farm markets in the Grand Rapids and Holland areas.

Bread fans can grab a couple fresh loaves for the week in bread varieties like Muesli, Almond Dutch Currant, and Dutch Crunch or Tijgerbrood, a soft and slightly sweet bread with a crispy crust brushed with a flavorful, rice-flour paste. Specials, rotating items, and fresh-roasted coffee are daily treats at deBoer’s, leaving room for a tasty exploration of one of Holland’s most loved Dutch bakeries.
